2009 Australian Festival of Chamber Music
What’s on in July – World-class musicians serenade the tropics at the 2009 Australian Festival of Chamber Music. The Australian Festival of Chamber Music is a nine-day celebration of virtuosic music which also features a Marine Talk and a stunning degustation dinner set on the rim of the Great Barrier Reef – 31 July to 8 August. Now in its 19th year, the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM) has developed an international reputation for its distinguished artists and innovative programming to become the largest chamber music festival in Australia, and one of the most diverse. Between 31 July and 8 August 2009, Townsville once again plays host to the annual winter event attracting some of the finest chamber musicians from around the world. The 2009 Festival welcomes 32 of the world’s best chamber musicians including AFCM debut performances by Queensland’s own Southern Cross Soloists and the Camerata of St John’s, and an exciting new collaboration with talented local dance troupe Extensions Youth Dance Company. Previously popular artists including cellist Zuill Bailey, world-renowned didgeridoo player William Barton, double bass player Kees Boersma, clarinetist Paul Dean, the Goldner String Quartet, Jack Liebeck, Ian Munro and Kathryn Scott will be returning to the Festival alongside exciting new artists. “We are delighted to have one of Australia’s most eminent composers and broadcasters, Andrew Ford, in residence this year,” says Festival Artistic Director Piers Lane. “It will be a privilege for us to give the world premiere of his important work The Past, which juxtaposes the poetry of (writer and Aboriginal activist) Oodgeroo Noonuccal with telling entries from Captain Cook’s journals.” Dedicated audiences return year-after-year, with last year showing a marked increase in ticket sales. “The 2008 Festival was our biggest ever with an 11% growth in audience numbers. Given the growth in visitor numbers combined with the overwhelming commitment of Townsville residents and the dedication of our artists, we are confident this event will continue to grow from strength to strength and this year’s Festival will one of our best ever,” says Jenny Bott, AFCM Chair, Chief Executive of the UNSW Foundation and former CEO of the Australia Council.
