'Allo 'Allo - Regal Theatre

WARTIME France comes to the Regal Theatre this July with Theatre Bits’ stage production of ’Allo ’Allo, based on the highly-popular BBC TV series.

 

Written by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft (also responsible for Are You Being Served?), the stage version follows the adventures of hapless café owner René and his wife Edith as they struggle to hide a priceless portrait stolen by the Nazis inside a sausage.

 

At the same time, René tries to keep his two long-running affairs with his waitresses a secret while being forced by the French resistance to help return two British pilots back to England.

 

The show is also renowned for several catchphrases including “Good moaning”, “Listen very carefully – I will say this only once” and “You stupid woman!”

 

After previously staging Cats and Annie at the Regal, directors Bob and Sue Mainwaring chose ’Allo ’Allo for its cleverly-written, fast-paced comedy and to help raise money for the Association for the Blind, Guide Dogs WA.

 

“It’s an example of good quality humour that delivers a highly-entertaining show for the whole family,” Bob said.

 

“We have tried to remain true to the original television series with the set, costumes and setting. And Alan Morris does a fine turn as René, which is integral to the success of the show.

 

“We also wanted to give something back to the community, which is why we’re helping the Association for the Blind.

 

“While nazi-occupied France may not seem particularly humorous, ’Allo ’Allo was actually designed to send up war-based film and television dramas, rather than the war itself.”

 

Originally from the UK, Bob and Sue Mainwaring have been involved in theatre for the past 40 years in various capacities, working extensively with Wanneroo’s Limelight Theatre since moving to Australia.

 

Sue said staging ’Allo ’Allo presented various challenges, including working with a large ensemble cast on a complex set.

 

“There are numerous characters, including Nazis, Italians, members of the French resistance and British airmen, so there is a broad range of accents to get right,” she said.
