On a cool autumn night the twinkling stars beckon, but there’s more to the celestial skies than the Southern Cross and Milky Way. The Noongar elders tell of a spirit woman who inhabits the heavens: her silver hair streaming across the horizon, capturing her spirit children as tiny stars within the strands.
To celebrate the International Year of Astronomy 2009, Scitech brings together these ancient stories with astronomy, food and wine, in a truly unique experience.
Enjoy the recollection of traditional Noongar folklore by Noel Nannup, a Noongar/Injabarndi man and professional story teller. Noel has spent his long career working to promote public awareness of the rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal people and the importance of caring for the environment. He will make your night with us a unique one to remember.
While enjoying the food and the stories, you can also admire the night sky from the Swan Valley; far from the lights of the city. Telescopes will be available and staffed by professional astronomy communicators from Horizon the Planetarium at Scitech, who can explain the scientific interpretation of the cosmos.
