Road Rules
Drive on the left and keep to the speed limit. The speed limit is 50km/ph in residential areas and 60km/ph on main roads unless roadside signs show a different limit.

The freeway has an upper limit of 100km/ph and country roads 110km/ph unless signs show otherwise. Limits of 40km/ph apply in school zones during times when students are arriving and leaving.

Speed limits are enforced by Multinova cameras which photograph vehicles exceeding the limit.

Traffic lights are often equipped with a camera to photograph drivers crossing red lights. Most road signs follow international design conventions.

Stop signs mean you must stop completely before crossing the white line and give way to crossing traffic before proceeding. You do not need to stop at a Give Way sign, but you must give way to other traffic.

Seat belts save lives. Always wear one, it is compulsory in Australia, Hand held mobile phones are illegal whilst driving.

Cycling
Perth and Fremantle have an extensive and expanding network of cycleways which means you can ride along the rivers and coast without having to worry about traffic. Most of the freeways also have a separate cycle lane. Bicycle helmets are compulsory. Cyclists must give way to pedestrians on dual use (shared) paths.

Detailed cycling maps are available from BikeWest 441, Murray Street, Perth or phone 9216 8313.
