The third play in the 'Jack Manning Trilogy'; by one of Australia's most popular playwrights, David Williamson, directed by Christine Ellis
Sometimes, the most charitable intentions go awry!
A conniving, narcissistic, backstabbing female CEO is the central character in Harbour Theatre’s production of CHARITABLE INTENT, winner of the 2002 Best New Play in the annual Green Room Awards. Australia’s most prolific and awarded playwright David Williamson has used his dislike of management jargon to bring humour to this, his final play in the Jack Manning trilogy.
Directed by reknowned community theatre personality Christine Ellis who has a passion for directing plays that have strong roles for women, CHARITABLE INTENT deals with many workplace issues that people may yet face or have faced during their working lives, with humour and humanity.
A new CEO has been appointed to a not-for profit charity and her modern corporate methods cause conflict with the staid, long term members of the organisation. The new CEO seems oblivious to the meaningless nature of corporate lingo but somehow seems to have captivated the Chairman and the Board with her textbook management drivel. The harmonious operation of the organisation has now become dysfunctional to the extent that the board requires a community conference in an attempt to restore balance.
A workplace squabble ensues at which the conference spirals out of control to the extent that there are head-to-head confrontations and unworkable relationships. One of the appealing features of this play is having a classic soap opera style nasty central character who the audience can metaphorically hiss and boo at.
CHARITABLE INTENT is a powerful play that shows the contradictions that erupt as workplace values change.
