A Clockwork Orange

‘A Clockwork Orange’ – by Anthony Burgess
Adapted for the stage by Connor Carlyle & Sarah Christiner
Presented by Life on Hold Productions

“What’s it going to be then, eh?”

Often misrepresented as a story about violence, Burgess’ work challenges us to consider what makes a man. Whether it’s better to be able to choose actions of vice – or to be forced into goodness.

First published in 1962, A Clockwork Orange was a latecomer to the canon of dystopian fiction born around World War II. Stanley Kubrick’s 1971 film adaptation, while still a cult classic, did no favours for mainstream appreciation of Burgess’ work. In 1987, the author himself adapted the story for the stage as a play with music.

Now, in 2018, Life on Hold Productions are presenting a new stage adaptation with permission from Burgess’ agents David Higham Associates, based strictly on the original text. With an award-winning cast and crew, this telling of the story aims to highlight Burgess’ message; not promote violence in youth culture.

Alex and his droogs enjoy ultraviolence, drug-laced beverages and all things debauched – not uncommon for young adults in any place or time. But these droogs grow weary of adhering to their little master’s plans for each nochy. Betrayed and imprisoned, Alex finds himself caught in the crossfires of political debate surrounding the treatment of criminality. Despite a warning to stay out of it, Alex firmly insinuates himself for a chance at early freedom. His criminal impulse is to be cured by good old-fashioned conditioning – but Dr Brodsky and his team simply couldn’t anticipate just how deeply their protocol would condition the boy. Released to be an upstanding member of society, Alex is alone in the world. But another betrayal, a near-death experience and more treatment brings him full circle. Another nochy, new droogs and a new sensibility. What path will young Alex choose?
